California Permit Test: 46 Questions
People typing "how many questions on the California permit test" into Google, Bing, or ChatGPT need three numbers: question count, pass mark, and the current application fee. Those numbers are below, with the steps to get the permit and a free 20-question practice path. PassMyDMV is an independent study tool. It is not the California DMV.

How many questions are on the California permit test?
California splits the knowledge test by age. Practice-test publishers still list:
- Under 18: 46 multiple-choice questions. You must answer 38 correctly (~83%).
- 18 or older: 36 multiple-choice questions. You must answer 30 correctly (~83%).
The official California DMV learner’s-permit page lists a passing score of 80% and does not publish the 46 / 36 split on that page. Treat 46 / 38 and 36 / 30 as the commonly cited format, then confirm current counts at dmv.ca.gov/instruction-permits before you test.
Every official question is drawn from the California Driver Handbook. PassMyDMV practice items cite the handbook page so you can read the rule, not just memorize a letter. The knowledge test is offered in 35 languages at California DMV, including English, Spanish, Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean, Tagalog, Russian, Armenian, Hindi, and Punjabi. Language availability is a California DMV feature, not a PassMyDMV claim about machine translation.
Current California permit fees
The Class C original application fee is $46. That is the figure on the official California DMV licensing-fees table (verified 2026-08-24). Older "$38" pages on the open web are stale.
- Application and fee are valid 12 months.
- Three knowledge-test attempts on that application, then you reapply.
- Behind-the-wheel retest is $9.
- Replacement / information-change cards are a separate $37 line on the same table.
If you fail all three knowledge attempts, you reapply and pay the application fee again. Under-18 applicants wait seven days between attempts, not counting the day of the failure. REAL ID, replacement cards, and license-issuance periods are separate charges — confirm those on the official fee page before you budget.
Can you take the California permit test online?
Not as a blanket no. Since September 2023 the California DMV has let two groups take a proctored at-home knowledge test:
- Californians under 18 applying for a driver license (parent or guardian must consent to the remote session), and
- people moving to California from another state who need a knowledge test.
The remote exam uses a computer or laptop with a webcam, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, not a tablet or phone. You get two online attempts; a third attempt is at a DMV office. Passing at home does not skip the office: you still bring identity and residency documents, take a photo, give a thumbprint, and pass a vision screening. Most other original applicants take the knowledge test at a DMV office. Office tests must start before 4:30 p.m.
PassMyDMV is practice. It is not the official California knowledge test.
Steps to get a California learner permit
- Age. 15.5 years old to apply for a learner permit. Under 18, a parent or guardian must sign consent and be present at the office.
- Driver education (minors). California requires an approved driver-education course for most applicants under 18 before the permit. If you are over 17.5 but under 18 you may get the permit without DE/DT certificates, but you cannot take the driving test until you are 18. Confirm your course on the California DMV site.
- Apply and pay. Complete the California Driver’s License or ID Card application and pay the $46 Class C original fee.
- Documents. Original or certified identity, California residency, and Social Security evidence. Photocopies usually fail. See what to bring to the DMV.
- Vision screening, photo, and knowledge test — office visit required even if you already passed at home.
- Hold the permit. If you are under 18, hold it at least 6 months (and complete required practice hours) before the road test.
What to study so 38 of 46 is realistic
California-specific items show up more than people expect: carpool-lane rules, school-zone speeds, Move Over / emergency-vehicle rules, and seat-belt / child-restraint law. Road signs (shape and color) and right-of-way at four-way stops are the other two clusters that produce misses.
A working study loop:
- Read the handbook section once.
- Answer practice questions with the citation open.
- Redo every miss the next day without notes.
- Stop when you can finish 20 mixed California questions at or above 80% on more than one day.
